Just in time for Christmas 2011, Hide&Seek present a selection of Tiny Games designed especially for the Christmas Season. Not sure what to do with all that wrapping paper? Want to make the chocolates last a little longer? Then try these!
The New Year Games
On the afternoon of January 1st, 2012, Edinburgh’s Old Town will be filled with the sound of the New Year Games. Created by Hide&Seek and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, the Games pit two teams – the Uppies and the Doonies – against one another. There’ll be outdoor play in the Grassmarket all afternoon, and four brand-new games developed by Scottish artists in four of Edinburgh’s most beautiful buildings.
Dreams Of Your Life
Hide&Seek worked with Film4 in producing a unique and innovative multiplatform experience to support the release of Carol Morley’s feature film Dreams of a Life.
The Show Must Go On
The Show Must Go On is an iOS game that puts the player in the shoes of an intrepid stage manager struck down by a terrible case of bad luck! Split into five mini-games, the player is required to retrieve the sheet music, assemble props, build the set, light the show and dress the chorus; with just moments to go until curtain up.
Tiny Games
Tiny Games are a collection of very small, very quick-to-understand games. They sit in the real world, and require no planning. They invite play from any interested passer-by. Their rules can be summarised in just a couple of sentences. They need no equipment, other than players and perhaps a pen to scribble with or a coin to throw.
Hinterland
Hinterland is a game that turns into a poem. Written in collaboration with performance poet Ross Sutherland, it initially debuted at Forest Fringe in Edinburgh in August 2011. Players venture out into the city to complete the poem’s four cantos, seeking answers to questions and delivering them – down the phone – to the mysterious, robotic Operator. As they progress through the game, their answers help shape a piece of poetry unique to them.
Green Lantern
In 2011 Hide&Seek worked with Warner Brothers on an integrated interactive marketing campaign for the UK release of Green Lantern. The campaign immersed existing fans in the world of Green Lantern and reached out to educate potential new fans who didn’t know what a Green Lantern is.
The Boardgame Remix Kit
The Boardgame Remix Kit is a a different way to use your old board games, giving you ways to use the boards and pieces of popular classics to create a host of new, original games. Described by Boingboing as “the most insanely clever Christmas gift idea of the year… It’s fun, it’s beautifully designed, and it will save the sanity of anyone stuck indoors over the holidays”, it’s available as an iPhone app, eBook, a paper book and a limited-edition set of rulecards.
PlayStation Game Runners
PlayStation Game Runners is an experimental project where PlayStation, members of the public and young people from diverse backgrounds come together to create social games. PlayStation believe the best games are played as a group. The project has been developed by PlayStation and Hide&Seek with a team of 8 initial Game Runners who PlayStation have picked to train as game designers and work to make the games relevant.
Battlefield
Battlefield is a playground game about the Norman invasion, developed as part of the BBC’s Normans season for their Hands On History series of activity packs. It’s designed to work for a range of ages, with a minimum of equipment but with an awful lot of running around.
The WonderLab
The WonderLab is an opportunity for world-class practitioners to come together to explore new ideas for how digital tools and playful structures can interact with their own work. Ten participants come together to share their expertise and insights, through a carefully structured three-day process, guided by experienced facilitators.
The London Poetry Game
The London Poetry Game ran first at the 2007 Hide&Seek Weekender, in prototype form, and again at the 2010 Weekender. Royal Opera House
Hide&Seek and the Royal Opera House are collaborating on a period of R&D to investigate how game mechanics and digital technologies could integrate with ROH’s brand and digital resources to create new kinds of cultural product.
Tate Trumps
Tate Trumps is an iPhone application which transforms the Tate Modern’s permanent collection into a game. Once players have toured the gallery choosing the artworks they think will bring them victory in their chosen mode, they meet up and play out a fast, dynamic card game to discover who has found the best examples from the collection.
221B
221B immerses players in the world of the recent Sherlock Holmes movie and challenges them to solve a series of murders. Unravelling the mystery leads players directly into the opening scene of the film, in which the killer is apprehended. Hide&Seek were given unprecedented access to scripts, sets & costumes, and created a rich online world that essentially acted as a prequel to the movie.
221B has featured In Book at the the D&AD Awards and was a One Show and Clio Awards medal winner.
